I have been kept asking about NICE/ OGRM/ TOG which topics to read and what to skip.
I have already posted on NICE guidelines in my previous post.
Similarly, I know it’s a tad difficult to know which topics are important. You will never know from which journal article they can pull up a question from.
Any topic not covered by the GTOP guidelines should be read from TOG. If there are a guideline and a TOG on a particular topic, any discrepancy in numbers like percentages or management plan, take the guideline as your answer.
But, as a MRCOG examinee, everyone should have all the TOG articles of at least 3 years soft copies in your laptops or tablets. I know they’re not available for free. Please interact with each other and accumulate the copies. It would not be feasible for me to upload them on this web site, nor ethical to do so.
You may not be able to read all, but when I say there is a TOG on a particular topic, you all need to find it and read it. Or if you come across a question, and don’t know the answer, search your collection.
So please have a personal TOG collection for yourself. My friend who became a Member recently advised me to read at least 2-3 years of all TOGs.
So be aware – being selective/choosy might cost a few questions- Especially the one which carry easy marks.
So please try to read as many editions as possible, and highlight the important points. No short cuts while reading. Every article should read fully.
- Percentages- of disease prevalence, of risks, of recurrence, of etiology, are important.
- Complications of a surgery, site of complications.
My next post will highlight the TOG issues that I read. So subscribe and stay tuned!

Thanks a lot for your kind and generous efforts. It really means a lot for us, and always waiting for more and more guiding tips from you. Really thanks.
I have to ask something about RCOG site content.Once from a site similar to this one, I got the advice to read every thing from RCOG site (guideline section). At first instance it seems a bit easy but after having a thorough tour of the site I got confused as there are long long lists of guidelines under the headings:
Clinical Governance Advice
Consent Advice
Good Practice
Best Practice
Patient Information Leaflets
Working Party Report
Study Group Statement
Scientific Impact Paper
So is it really so to go through all these (in addition to Gtop & NICE) ?
I seek your advice about this and wish you share your experience about the study material available at RCOG site other than Gtop and StratOG. Best regards,
Shagufta Khizar
Anjana Mackeen says
Good question. GTOP of course as u know is the most important.
Among other guidelines- Few selective topics are important. Obviously you cant read ALL.
Eg- Clinical Gov Advice- Audit
Consent- Introduction/ All the % in Hysterectomy/ CS/ Lap.scope.
I will single out these topics in following blogs.
I didnt read any on — Working Party Report ,Study Group Statement.

Does the same apply to the BJOG published every month ..they must also be read fully?
Anjana Mackeen says
No, I did not read BJOG in an exam oriented way. Used it if there was any specific article to be read.

Hi, thank you for following the page.
The mother of all guideline source when it comes to MRCOG exam is, GTG. The next you may take Strat OG. NICE and TOG there after.
Hope that helps.
